Back when I was on inpatient it was a true struggle to get calories. I was running up and down the stairs from the ICU to 5N to the CCC back to the ICU etc. When rounds went past 1 I felt too weird to ask for a lunch break and the next thing you know, it's 6:30 pm and you are about the keel over. You learn to carry a granola bar on you at all times and to essentially horde food. See a cookie lying around? Stuff it in your pocket for a later time. Have a lunch break? Eat as much as you can. As fast as you can. Cookies, chips, pizza, anything. You don't know when you'll be eating again. Maybe you can take care of dinner at the same time too.
Too bad this sort of behavior has carried over to outpatient, where I kind of sit and don't move all day. I get 1 hr lunch breaks with gourmet meals provided by those drug reps. Every day. Today we had shrimp kabobs, pesto pasta, chicken kabobs, baked mosticelli, bread, cookies, and salad (mixed lettuce, raspberries, green apples, crumbled bleu cheese, candied walnuts and raspberry dressing). I can't seem to convince my body that I'm no longer starving and I think the gorging on food is starting to show. Yikes.
