Asking for LORs is always so uncomfortable. Always. No matter how great an experience the rotation was, or how great a relationship you had with the attending, asking for the letter is awkward. There is no good way to do it. There is no good time to do it.
Mine happen in one of two ways.
1) Chicken out last minute and kick yourself on your walk home for being a chicken. Then, think about how you're going to make it back to ask the attending in person sometime not tooo far in the future. It works okay, if you know the attending's schedule and can find free time to match his free time. Riiight.
2) At the end of a wonderful last meeting over coffee, you shake his hand and just as he's about to leave, you squeak, "CanIaskyouaquestion?" Then, you say, "Ummmmm do you feel like you know me well enough to write me a strong letter?"
Ugh, I cringe just writing this. It makes me feel like I have an ulterior motive for trying on a rotation. There is no good way, but do let me know if you've figure out a way.
