more on last night
even though i felt kind of crappy, i went in for study session anyway. too bad i didn't know i was supposed to be arguing, and coming up with snappy comebacks all night, or i would've taken the night off. get me at my weakest, why don't you. i should've know that our perfect class was too good to be true, but i was actually shocked when all of the sudden the kids went psycho, forgot how to listen, study, respect authority, blah. our class evil turned out to be george, which was really disappointing because he made a really good impression the first few days. george apparently finished all his work 45 minutes early (which is actually impossible), wouldn't put away his cards when i asked, talked back and argued with EVERYTHING i said, and then told me i wasn't challenging him enough. it also helps that he's the ringleader of the boy squad. jeezus. lesson: if it's too good to be true, it probably is.
ever wonder what goes on in the teacher's lounge?
shit talking kids, basically. they sit around talking about kids, share strategies and plot new ways to make their lives more difficult. conversations involve lots of "that little bastard," "i'll break them soon," and "i used the finger wag today! don't worry, not thaat finger...even though it was hard to resist." it's funny, because i always knew teachers had to talk about their kids, but i had no idea that were so vindictive! one guy told the group, "i usually try to ramp up the difficulty. let them breathe a little on the first day. but if no one's cried by the third, i haven't done my job." and everyone nods understandingly. lesson: teachers are people too
how teacher pets are made
i don't care how many times teachers say you start everyday with a clean slate. it's false. when you're chasing after 18 preteens 8 hours a day, the nice kids that listen, do well, and participate get a gold star. you watch the loud, lazy, and rude ones like a hawk and call them out on everything they do. lesson: be good to your teachers.
revenge is sweet
giving the kids too much freedom the last few days definitely came back to kick me in the butt. (they were good, so i let them sit wherever they wanted, and study with ipods! i'm dumb.) but we showed them who's boss today, *smirks* thanks to michelle, who has 10+ years of kid knowhow. new seating chart, new set of class rules, SILENT study sessions, TONSandTONS of work, no break, some one-on-one time with george in the hallway (we found out he hadn't turned any of the work in). we're waiting for them to break, and it's working. michelle and i almost felt guilty at the end of the day, because most of the kids are really just great kids. BUT i need to remember that they're 14 yr old babies who actually do need constant supervision. lesson: give them an inch, and they'll take a mile
apparently i've mastered the evil glare. one look, and silence ensues. i actually heard david say, "guys! shhhhh! christine's evil glare." and i sense the fear in george. muahahaha. i love it.
