Night float

The past four night have been a blur. I wake up at 3:45 and shower, go to work at 5:15, run around/catch babies all night, go home between 7 and 9 and sleep. Repeat. It's busy, crazy, hectic and fun in a weird way, but I can't remember any specifics. Just moms, babies and bodily fluids. Lots of different types of fluids.

I can't believe how many scary things I've seen over just the last few nights - uterine rupture on the OR table, secondary bladder rupture, retained placenta and D&Cs, shoulder dystocia, ovarian hyperstim -> stroke -> frontoparietal lobectomy, tub birth, fourth degree tears, twins, post partum hemorrhage, and more than a few eager babies flying out onto the bed before anyone's gotten their gloves on. No matter how well things are going, something can always go wrong. Moms can push for 3+ hours and still end up going for a C-section, and then suddenly have a uterine rupture. What the heck, right?

I'm glad we have people who want to take care of these crazy things because I could never do it. All week I've been in fight or flight mode because in OB you can never let your guard down, never relax. You never know what's going to happen. Things are unpredictable, not always logical and the stakes are high. The worst thing that can happen? Maternal and fetal death in front of dad. That fear paralyzes me during OB emergencies. Even when I get home, I'm still thinking about work, replaying deliveries in my head. SAD.
